For almost any golfer, a home alongside historic Pebble Beach Golf Links would be a dream come true. But is it worth $31 million?

That’s what the wealthiest golfers in the country are asking themselves this morning, as an incredible home on the California course has hit the market.

A view of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Money game: A timeline of Pebble Beach’s multimillion-dollar wheeling and dealing
By: GOLF Editors

The property in question is known as Lucky Strike, and, according to the Wall Street Journal, it got that name for a reason. The current owners are Texans C. Cary Patterson and his wife, Lois. Patterson is a lawyer who successfully argued on the state of Texas’ behalf during litigation against Tobacco companies in the 1990s.

The 7,700 square foot mansion located steps away from Carmel Bay features four bedrooms, a movie theater, a guest cottage and a garage with an office. More importantly, it’s situated right alongside the 11th and 12th holes at Pebble, so any future owners can watch the 2027, ’32, ’37 and ’44 U.S. Opens from the comfort of their backyard.

You can check out some photos of the property shared by Darren Rovell on Twitter below.

Homes at Pebble Beach are few and far between, and they rarely go on the market. Given the lack of supply and the high demand from golf dreamers everywhere, the prices of these luxe mansions can be startling. Last year, another home at Pebble sold for more than $32 million. Given that, the $31 million price tag on Lucky Strike is something of a deal.

“I am excited to welcome a diverse field of young golfers to the TGR JR Invitational presented by TaylorMade,” Woods said in a press release. “Hosting this event at The Hay at Pebble Beach is a perfect venue to showcase a fun and competitive atmosphere for a talented group of young golfers.”

A 27-hole qualifying round will take place on The Hay on the first day of competition followed by championship and consolation matches on The Links at Spanish Bay on Day 2.

Juniors will be invited through an application process “which promotes the shared passions of TGR Live and the Pebble Beach Junior Golf Association by providing a unique opportunity and exposure to the sport of golf,” according to the release.

Juniors aged 10-17 (as of Jul 31st) are eligible to apply and can do so here until August 21st.

One of the most famous holes in golf is going under the knife.

The surgery is happening on the green of the 8th hole at Pebble Beach, a dramatic seaside par-4 with an approach over the Pacific that Jack Nicklaus once called the most magnificent second shot in the game.

The work came to light Friday when Twitter user @GlorifiedDonkey, who identifies himself as a Pebble Beach caddie, posted four photos of the construction project.

Pebble Beach representatives could not immediately be reached for comment, but a source familiar with the project told GOLF.com that the green is being enlarged and its back-to-front slope made less severe to create more hole locations.

The photos posted to social media appear to corroborate that. They show the turf on the old putting surface torn up, with a fence encircling what appears to be an expanded green in the works, its right side drawn closer to the bluffs.

The course remains open for resort play, with a temporary green on the 8th that will remain in place until the work is completed in July, said a Pebble Beach tee-time reservationist who answered the phone Friday.

Construction on the hole comes in the wake of news of Pebble being named as an “anchor site” for the USGA, pegged to host a number of U.S. Opens and U.S. Women’s Opens in a regular rotation that will also include Pinehurst No. 2 and Oakmont.

Pebble, of course, also hosts a regular Tour stop, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which has long been a fixture of the West Coast swing.

While it is not uncommon for both the Tour and the USGA to request design changes at venues hosting their events, it’s not certain that’s the case here.

A source familiar with the project told GOLF.com that work on the 8th is part of an ongoing series of course improvements, which in recent years have included renovations to the 9th, 11th, 14th and 17th greens.

Among those weighing in on Twitter was the former long-time Tour caddie John Wood, who carried for Matt Kuchar before taking a job as an on-course commentator for NBC Sports.

“Good idea,” Wood tweeted of the work on 8. “That green is so limited w/pin positions. When original green was built, stimp speeds were around 8-9 & you could use first 2/3 of the green. Now, with US Open speeds closer to 13, the first 2/3 of the green is unusable.. Will give more options in setup. #11 should be next.”

Mark them down on your calendar: six more national championships for Pebble Beach.

The USGA on Wednesday announced a partnership with Pebble that brings the iconic Monterey course into its growing stable of U.S. Open “anchor sites.”

As part of the agreement, Pebble will host the 2032, 2037 and 2044 U.S. Opens, on top of the already scheduled U.S. Open in 2027. The course, which is slated to hold its first U.S. Women’s Open in 2023, will get the women’s championship again in 2035, 2040 and 2048.

In addition, the USGA announced that it will stage the U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Women’s Senior Open in back-to-back weeks on Pebble’s sister course, Spyglass Hill, in 2030.

With the news, Pebble joins Pinehurst Resort, in North Carolina, and Oakmont Country Club, in Pennsylvania, as “anchor sites,” tapped by the governing body to host multiple U.S. Opens, among other championships.

Like Pinehurst and Oakmont, Pebble is no stranger to the spotlight. Since staging its first USGA championship in 1929, when it welcomed the U.S. Amateur, it has held 12 other national championships, including six U.S. Opens.

The emphasis on “anchor sites” is part of the USGA’s ongoing effort to ensure a sense of continuity in its events, a campaign that gained public momentum after course setup controversies at more than one U.S. Open prompted some critics to charge that the event was losing its character.

There is no lack of character, or continuity, in the championship schedule as it stacks up now. Here’s a look at U.S. Open venues over the next 10 years.

In a week where the golf world was distracted with off-course conversation, Jordan Spieth reminded us what makes him a fan favorite. Spieth risked it all on Saturday at the 8th hole of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, hitting his approach shot from the edge of a six-story cliff in an effort to save a precious stroke.

There are, it turns out, two ways to play the 10th hole at Pebble Beach: the way it was built, and the way God intended.

The former of the two routings is simple, straightforward, and inarguably effective. It is four-hundred and ninety-five yards of strategic drudgery, requiring a straight, sturdy drive to place oneself in position to execute another straight, sturdy approach, and, if both previous steps are executed properly, will provide a straight, sturdy putt for birdie. For decades, it has served as Pebble Beach’s official U.S. Open routing, and through three days at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, this routing has ranked as the fourth-hardest hole at Pebble Beach.

The former is a good routing, yes, but it was not the routing God intended. No, you couldn’t find that routing unless you were looking for it. The routing God intended lies on a cropping of land next to the 9th green pitched at a 45-degree angle from the original tee markers. It is some 150 yards closer to the flagstick, and when utilized, turns the 10th hole into a canvass of shot creativity. At just 356 yards, the 10th hole’s alternate routing makes it drivable for the pros, but not without a significant buy-in; the viewpoint from the tee box means players seeking to drive the green must carry their tee shot over the ocean and the cliffs below. Anything further left will wind up in danger, while anything further right is, well, seal food.

The PGA Tour has experimented with this hole configuration in previous years, and the results are fairly conclusive: using the alternate routing turns the 10th into a scoring hole. In last year’s Pebble Pro-Am, the 10th hole played a half-stroke easier from Saturday (normal routing) to Sunday (alternate), seeing 4 birdies or better and 127 bogeys or worse on Saturday to 24 birdies or better and only 3 bogeys or worse on Sunday.

So, where did the mysterious tee box originate? According to the Associated Press’ Doug Ferguson, who explored the routing back in 2014, the tee box was part of the course’s original routing, but was left unkempt for years by Pebble Beach’s maintenance staff. Part of the issue with the alternate tee, Ferguson found, was that its proximity to the 9th green made it bad for both pace of play and player safety.

On Sunday, though, the best players in the world proved ample reason for an exception. As the pressure rose, would the leaders risk going for it on Pebble Beach’s 10th? Or would they stay back safely? Jordan Spieth, who entered Sunday’s final round a stroke back of the lead, offered a hint to Ferguson back in 2014.

“If I grow up and I’m smart, I’ll probably lay up,” Spieth said. “If I’m under 30 years old, I’ll go for it.”

Just like God intended.

It’s Pebble Beach week, and you know what that means — star athletes, comedians, country music singers, actors and more will tee it up alongside the best golfers in the world at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am beginning on Thursday.

This year’s field took a slight hit with the Saudi International taking place across the globe, but there are still plenty of headliners on the Monterey Peninsula.

Patrick Cantlay is the betting favorite but big names like Daniel Berger, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose are also in the field. Will Zalatoris, who lost in a playoff at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, was in the field but had to withdraw due to a positive Covid-19 test.

But of course, what makes this tournament unique, beyond its iconic venue, are the other golfers in the field. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is in the mix and so are actor Don Cheadle, retired NFL star Larry Fitzgerald, comedian Bill Murray and musicians Macklemore, Darius Rucker and Jake Owen, to name a few.

World Golf Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Awards will be handed out to Dick Ferris and Peter Ueberroth, two men instrumental in keeping Pebble Beach atop the list of the world’s best public bucket-list golf destinations.

The World Golf Hall of Fame announced the news on Tuesday, and the duo will be honored at the Hall’s induction ceremony on March 9, 2022, in conjunction with The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

In 1999, Ferris, Ueberroth, Arnold Palmer and Clint Eastwood led a group that purchased the Pebble Beach Company from Taiheiyo Club and Sumitomo Bank, returning the club to U.S. ownership. Ferris and Ueberroth served as co-chairmen of the Pebble Beach Company for 20 years and helped keep Pebble public and remain a world-wide golf destination.

“We are pleased to recognize the important and long-standing contributions that Dick and Peter have made to the game of golf through their thoughtful stewardship of Pebble Beach Company,” said Greg McLaughlin, the CEO of the World Golf Hall of Fame, in a release. “We are proud to recognize them through this new award at the 2022 Induction Ceremony, paying homage to their achievements and what those have meant for the sport.”

While Ferris and Ueberroth receive their Lifetime Achievement Awards, Tiger Woods, Susie Maxwell Berning, Tim Finchem and the late Marion Hollins will enter the Hall of Fame as members.

This is gonna be good: a U.S. Open on a public course, on the Pacific, in California. Prime-time golf for millions of us, straight outta Torrey. Check it out on Sunday. Morning brunch with the fam. Afternoon golf with your regulars. Pizza for supper. Afterward: Find the clicker and settle in for showtime. Your HD TV, our national championship. DJ driving on the cliffside 4th. JT putting on the windswept 11th. Jay at large, taking the whole thing in.

No, you don’t know Jay. (Unless you do.) Jay Rains, San Diego lawyer. The man who had the idea, 20 or so years ago, that Torrey Pines South could be a U.S. Open course in the first place. No Jay Rains, no Tiger–Rocco playoff in 2008. No Bryson on the driving range this year, working up a sweat in the sweet dusk air.

Every course with ambition has a Jay Rains, a person who dreams in green and knows how to get things done. The late Sandy Tatum, for instance, at Harding Park, where the PGA Championship was played memorably last year. What Tatum knew was the promise of a run-down city course. What he figured out was Willie Brown, legendary San Francisco mayor. Come together.

Which gets us to Dick Ferris of Chicago, Orlando — and the Pebble Beach Golf Links (to complete this visit to a trio of anybody-can-play-’em major venues in the Golden State). Ferris is a former CEO of United and a former chairman of the PGA Tour board. He was close to Arnold Palmer. He has impacted your life more than you might know. One Dick Ferris innovation: Call United for a flight, connect with Hertz and Hilton on the same call. He knew our needs. A flight, a ride, a bed. A tee time.

That last item is the biggest thing Dick Ferris did for us. He helped Pebble Beach reclaim its place as the ultimate American bucket-list golf resort. In 2027, the U.S. Open will return to Pebble, as it must. Talk about prime-time and center stage. The Open at Pebble.

For 20 years, starting in 1979, Pebble Beach had a series of owners. From what I could tell, they were milking it dry. You could pay an outrageous green fee and have no chance of finishing.

Then Ferris came in — with Palmer, Clint Eastwood and Peter Ueberroth — and bought the club from Japanese ownership. The two luminaries in the middle were the ultimate closers. (Who’s going to say no to Arnold? To Dirty Harry?) Ueberroth, the former baseball commissioner, was the group’s big-picture man. Ferris’ job was to get the trains to run on time again, in the bag room, on the course, in the kitchens and bars. Ferris came of age in the prosperity of America in the ’50s. Made in America is stamped on his life and, once again, on Pebble.

The Pebble Beach rebirth posse (clockwise from top right): Palmer, Ferris, Ueberroth, Eastwood and former PBGL CEO Bill Perocchi. pebblebeach.com

He’s funny because he’s direct. Ten years ago, when the Presidents Cup was at Royal Melbourne, Tim Finchem, as Tour commissioner, asked Ferris who he wanted to follow. Tiger? Phil? Adam Scott? Arrangements would be made.

“Roger Maltbie,” Ferris said.

“Roger?” Maltbie was there as a TV commentator. “Why Roger?”

“He’s got a cart.” Dick needed to get off his feet. He and his buddies had been playing daybreak golf at nearby courses. Of course! Dick liked to play.

And now, at 84, Dick Ferris is showing more game than ever. He has advanced ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. No matter: In late April, Ferris and an old friend, Sam Reeves, played in a three-day, greater Pebble team event called The Swallows. The Ferris–Reeves team, 170 years between them, received 38 combined shots. That is, their regular handicaps. There were 42 teams. The old men beat 41 of them. In a normal year, the winners are booed. This year, everybody stood and clapped and many cried. Dick Ferris, tough old bastard, can’t swallow food any more. He can’t talk. He struggles to breathe. But he can play and when he can’t he can try.

“In my 78 years, I have never been more inspired by anyone more than you,” an admirer, Bob Kavner, wrote to Ferris after the hardware was handed out. “Without words, you taught all of us to make the best of what we have. You gave a master class in dignity these past few days.”

Dick Ferris helped get Pebble ready for her close-up. As for Dick Ferris, he’s ready, period.
