Thomas Detry, in one stroke, went from contending both at the BMW PGA Championship and in the European Ryder Cup team race, to DQ’d and done.

He had signed his name.

Detry, after shooting a second-round 70 on Friday at one of the European Tour’s biggest events, was disqualified after turning in an incorrect scorecard, a violation of Rule 3.3b of the Rules of Golf. The specifics of Detry’s infraction were not immediately known.

“Gutted to have to confirm that due to signing for a wrong scorecard this afternoon, I was disqualified from the @BMWPGA,” Detry tweeted. “Tough pill to swallow after a solid battle out there the past few days & very sad to finish such an incredible event too early.”

While the infraction occurs occasionally, rare is it that it happens to a player in contention. Detry’s 70 followed a first-round 69, and he would have finished Friday in a tie for 25th and seven strokes behind the leader, Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Even rarer is the fact that it all but eliminates Detry from contention for the European Ryder Cup team. While he could still earn one of three captain’s picks to the squad, a victory at the BMW would have likely secured one of nine automatic spots, according to the Ryder Cup site. In the two avenues to qualify on Friday, he was 11th in the European points race (the top four are taken), and 18th in the world points list (the top five are selected).

Ahead of Thomas Detry on the par-3 17th at the Renaissance Club was about 40 yards to the pin. He had hooked his tee shot left and now needed to navigate that distance to protect his lead during Saturday’s third round of the Scottish Open

Behind Detry, and to the left and right of him on the way to the hole?

“Hit a brutal shot. Went strong left,” he said after his round. “Hit the grandstand, and I actually thought it was just dead.

“But luckily there was a beer garden there, and it was a lot of nice people to cheer me on.”

Indeed. Below and to the right of the grandstand that Detry hit were fans, their wooden benches and four tents. The space was cleared, and because the grass had been walked on, the lie was clean.

“Actually not that bad actually,” an announcer on the Golf Channel broadcast said. “Just get it in the air and get it pitching over the ridge. The up and down of his life.”

Detry, after a few practice swings, swung, the ball landed about 30 feet short of the pin, and it rolled just past the hole before finishing about 5 feet past. He handed his wedge back to his caddie and was given his putter. On his way to the green, Detry heard the cheers of those near the “Bar by the 17th Green” tent. Maybe not quite the glamour of walking up 18 at, say, Royal St. George’s at next week’s Open Championship. But still.

“That could have been all sorts of awful. Instead it’s one of his shots of the day,” another announcer said on the Golf Channel broadcast.

From there, Detry dropped the par putt, he’d par the 18th, and he’ll enter Sunday tied for the lead with Matthew Fitzpatrick.

“What a three. What a three,” another announcer said on the broadcast. “Might be one of those moments where you think well, it’s my week.”

One European Tour pro is thanking his lucky…wind socks today in South Africa after receiving one of the luckiest breaks of the year in the second round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Belgian pro Thomas Detry was fighting for the lead on Friday when he ran into some major trouble at the par-4 17th hole at Gary Player Country Club. Detry knocked his first drive on the 478-yard hole way off line and into a water hazard running down the left side.

The 26-year-old was then forced to tee up a new ball and give it another go with his trusty driver. But his pitiful first shot seemed to have shaken him, because drive No. 2 quickly started sailing toward the same hazard immediately after impact.

That’s when fortune decided to intercede and help the faltering golfer avoid a truly disastrous score on the hole.

Just when Detry’s ball was about to fly over the hazard line and splash down into the water, it caught the very top of a flagpole situated at the water’s edge that held a wind sock. The pole halted the ball’s momentum, and deflected it harmlessly into the rough, leaving it safe and dry, though maybe a little banged up.

Check out the unlikely break below.

The fortunate turn of fate couldn’t have come at a better time for Detry. He still made a double-bogey 6 on the hole, but it could have been much, much worse. Despite following that up with a bogey on the final hole, Detry was able to finish with a 71, leaving him in sole possession of third place at seven under, four behind leader Zander Lombard.

If Detry is able to come from behind over the next two rounds and win the tournament, he might want to take that flagpole and buy himself a nice, big display case with his winner’s check and give it a proper place of honor in his home.
